1-Butanol is used as a solvent for colors, for the synthesis of esters and ethers, for the manufacture of plasticizers and fragrances.
It is an excretory product from bacters under anaerobic conditions. The microbiological production of 1-butanol is achieved by anaerobic digestion of glucose with Clostridium butylicum or C. acetobutylicum. The occurrence of 1-butanol in stored blood samples serves as an indicator of rot.
