1-Butanol is used as a solvent for paints, for the synthesis of esters and ethers, for the manufacture of plasticizers and fragrances.
The synthesis of 1-butanol is done either by hydroformylation of Propene (reaction with CO and hydrogen) via the intermediate stage of Butanal or, alternativly, through bacterial fermentation of glucose, for example with Clostridium acetobutylicum or C. butylicum.
1-butanol is an excretory product from bacters under anaerobic conditions. The occurrence of 1-butanol in stored blood samples serves as an indicator of rot.
